Fashion Design Degrees

MA vs MFA vs MDes

How master’s awards in fashion differ and what to check beyond the abbreviation, including research and practice-based routes.

Last reviewed 2 November 2026

Master’s programs in fashion take one to two years, and the abbreviation tells you less than the course description.

The abbreviations

An MA is a Master of Arts and is common in Europe and the United Kingdom, often one year of full-time study. An MFA is a Master of Fine Arts, common in North America and usually two years with a thesis or final exhibition. An MDes is a Master of Design, with a design-research orientation. An MSc suits technology- and science-led programs such as fashion technology or materials.

Taught or research

A taught master’s is assessed through projects and a final collection or thesis. A research master’s, such as an MPhil, prepares for doctoral study. This directory lists research degrees separately and states the program kind.

Check before you apply

Whether the program requires a portfolio and a statement, what prior qualification it accepts, whether it is open to career-changers, how it is funded, what the final assessment is, and whether the award is recognised in the country where you plan to work or study next.

Beware of title inflation

A master’s title does not by itself mean advanced studio facilities or small cohorts. Compare studios, cohort size where published, and the final work students produce.
